ASSESSMENTS

INTRODUCTION

Indian Educational School, Kuwait is dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of educational integrity and excellence. This Assessment Policy outlines our commitment to uphold the rigorous standards set by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi. It aims to ensure that all assessments are conducted fairly and transparently, reflecting the true capability of our students while supporting their academic growth and development.

The policy aims to seamlessly integrate the latest directives from CBSE with our school’s educational practices. By adopting this policy, we strive to achieve consistent and comprehensive evaluation of students’ progress, ensuring that the assessments are meaningful and reflective of the curriculum. This framework supports our broader educational objectives, fostering an environment that encourages academic excellence and ethical assessment practices.

RATIONALE

This policy is crafted with the dual purpose of aligning our assessment methods with the revised guidelines of the CBSE and ensuring a robust framework that measures and supports student learning effectively. By setting clear standards for internal assessments, we aim to monitor learning outcomes accurately as per the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) guidelines. The policy supports high-quality curriculum delivery, which is crucial for enhancing student achievement and ensuring successful implementation of the CBSE curriculum requirements.

CLASSIFICATION OF THE SUBJECTS

Subjects will be classified as Scholastic (core subjects) and Co-Scholastic.

The following subjects are Scholastic or core subjects for Grade 1 and 2.

Following subjects are considered as Co-Scholastic (only grades are needed to be entered in the score sheet).

Grades are entered only twice a year one for each term for the non-Scholastic subjects.

ASSESSMENT SYSTEM FOR GRADE 1&2

  • The school will follow a periodic evaluation system as prescribed by the CBSE.
  • Grade 1&2 will have two terms in this academic year named as term 1 and term 2.
  • Term -1 include April- September and Term – 2 is from October – March
  • All the subjects will have the assessment of different skills as specified by the CBSE.
  • There will be two periodic assessments (PA 1 & PA 2) and two summative assessments (SA 1 & SA 2).
  • PA 1 & PA 2 will be conducted for 40 marks; SA 1 & SA 2 will be conducted for 50 marks, for the core subjects (ENGLISH /HINDI / FRENCH /MATH/ EVS / ARABIC).
  • Written assessment will be scheduled for Computer, GK and Islamic studies which will be conducted in their own period, but not during the written assessment days of other core subjects.
  • Test Notebooks will be distributed in the class by the concerned subject teachers and the answers will be discussed in the class.
  • Separate folders should be maintained by the students to keep the answer sheets of the written assessment for other subjects like GK, Computer Science etc.
  • All the Test Notebooks will be given to the children to be taken home. Parents can see the Test Notebooks, sign and return to the teacher.
  • Marks of different skills (subject attributes for each core subject) for a term will be calculated and converted into grades.
  • These grades for each skill will be shown in the progress card.
  • Teachers will enter the marks before the closing date which will be intimated through an IM by the IT department. There SHOULD BE NO ERROR IN MARK / GRADE ENTRIES. Once entered NO CORRECTION WILL be entertained unless the Principal approves.
  • Co- scholastic areas like Physical Education, Art, Music, Dance, etc. should be provided with grade for concerned skills mentioned in the rating scale once in a term.
  • Life skill, ART/MUSIC/ DANCE can have an overall grade for a term.
  • Grades for Personality development and notebook evaluation will be given by the class teachers concerned.
  • CBSE has recommended a five-point scale for indicating the achievements as shown in the table below.

  • The grade interpretation for the scholastic areas (core subjects) are given below. The subjects under co-scholastic areas must be graded based on a five-point scale as stated below: –

ABSENT FOR THE ASSESSMENT

It is mandatory for a student to appear in all the assessments.  Students absent due to illness should produce medical certificate and they will be marked as exempted (SICK) for that paper. The student must submit the medical certificate on the day he/she comes back to school after the illness based on which exemption will be granted. Submission of medical certificates after the marks are entered will not receive any concession. Teachers should remind parents about submitting MCs. Those remaining absent for any other reason will be marked absent (AB). However, such students will not be considered for any merit awards.

PROMOTION RETENTION POLICY

  • All students from Grade 1 and 4 will be promoted to the next higher level irrespective of their level of achievement.
  • However, the performance of the students will be analyzed, and feedback will be given to the students and parents based on the assessments conducted.
  • Students will be encouraged to set their goals and the same will be informed to the parents.
  • Students must score minimum 50%marks for Arabic & Islamic studies.
  • No retention in Grades 1 to 5.
  • If a student does not have a minimum of 75% attendance, he/ she cannot qualify to be promoted to the next class. This policy is followed strictly for all students from Grade 1 to Grade 12

PROJECT AND ASSIGNMENTS

PROJECT – Project will be interdisciplinary group project/ individual projects/activities which are conducted within the class hours.

ASSIGNMENTS: Practice worksheets are provided in Math and English during the summer vacation to keep the children in touch with the concepts.

ASSESSMENT FOR GRADE 3, 4 and 5

ASSESSMENT FOR GRADE- 6 to 9

Periodic Assessments – (PAs) and Term End Examinations (6 to 9)

  • There will be two terms in an academic year for grades 6– 9. First term- April to September; Second term- October to March.
  • There will be 2 Periodic Assessments in an academic year named PA1 and PA 2. These two assessments will be of pen and paper tests. In addition to these there will be multiple assessments like quizzes oral tests, concept map, visual expression etc. for grades 5 to 9.
  • PAs will be conducted only for the core subjects (Scholastic Subjects) mentioned in this policy and the weighting is 5 marks for pen and paper tests and 5 marks for multiple assessments.
  • PAs (PEN AND PAPER) are for 30 marks and 1 hour duration. The timetable will be given in advance. The scores of PA – I and PA II will be taken and converted to 05 marks for the promotion.
  • Internal assessment has four components – Periodic Tests, Multiple Tests, Portfolio Evaluation (PE) and Subject Enrichment Activities (SEA). MTs, PE and SEA carry 5 marks each. This is applicable for all core subjects including Math and Languages.
  • Half Yearly Examination will be held in September and Yearly Exam in March (class 9 in Feb) and the maximum marks for all the papers 80 marks. (25% marks objective type and 75% marks subjective type questions).
  • All lessons taught till 15 September will be tested in the Half Yearly Examination. For grades 6 – 8, 30% marks for the Yearly Examination will be based on the portions meant for the first term and the rest based on the topics taught in the second term (portions for this 30% will be notified to the students in advance). For grade 9 it will be as per CBSE pattern.
  • Term end exams will not be scheduled for computer, KSS and Islamic studies which will be conducted in their own period and not during the written assessment days of other subjects.
  • Mark entry will be done as and when the assessment is over. Maximum 5 days of correction time will be given. It will be done by the concerned subject teachers.

CO –SCHOLASTIC ASSESSMENT

  • An overall grade for a semester will be awarded for the following: –

  • Art and Craft (work experience)
  • Music

  • Grading pattern for Co –Scholastic area will be as follows: 5 POINT SCALE (A – E)
  • Discipline of the students will be assessed and graded on a 3-point scale (A – E)

ABSENT FOR THE ASSESSMENT

  • It is mandatory for a student to appear for all the PAs and Term End Exams.
  • If any of the students is absent on medical ground in any of the assessment, his/her total mark will be calculated by exempting him/her for that test/exam.
  • New students who join the school during the academic year need to submit a grade/ Mark statement from their previous school and the same will be incorporated in the progress card.

PROMOTION/ RETENTION POLICY

  • It is mandatory for a student to appear for all the tests and examinations.
  • Students must score 33% in internal assessment and examinations in each of the 5 core subjects of scholastic area and the aggregate of all the subjects to qualify for the assessment.
  • No retest will be conducted under any circumstances.
  • 75% attendance is compulsory to be eligible for the promotion to the next higher grade.
  • Only to those students who meet the above-mentioned requirements of CBSE. (33% Aggregate score in each 5 subjects, 33% in aggregate of all the 5 subjects) will be qualified to be promoted.
  • If a candidate fails in one subject, he/she will be condoned and promoted. In case he fails in two subjects, a re-examination will be conducted, and if he qualifies in the re-examinations, he will be promoted. If the candidate fails in more than two subjects he will be detained in the class.

SYLLABUS FOR RE- EXAMINATION

Syllabus for re-examination should be same as that of final exam. The school will prepare its own question paper for the improvement examination based on the design of the yearly exam. Due care may be taken to ensure that the standard of this question paper is comparable to that of the question paper used for the yearly exam received from other Bhavan’s School.

RETENTION PROCEDURE

  • No student will be retained if retained previously in that same grade/year.
  • A student will not be retained more than twice during his/her school career. The second time of retention will lead to the child leaving the school.
  • Students with special needs will not be retained. If a student with special needs is not making the expected progress, the objectives in their Independent Education Plan (IEP) will be adjusted.

WHEN DECIDING TO RETAIN A STUDENT:

  • Schools shall explore all potential alternatives to retention.
  • If a student is failing to make the expected progress, the school shall immediately notify the student’s parents/guardians.
  • A meeting will be conducted right after the notification to discuss measures to provide the student with additional support.
  • The school shall propose ways to support the student in making progress and reaching his/her potential including modifications to the teaching program and providing additional support.
  • The school shall report such interventions (including impacts) to parents/guardians regularly.

PROJECT AND ASSIGNMENTS

  • PROJECT – Project will be interdisciplinary group project and it will be informed well in advance and sufficient time will be given to complete and submit.
  • ASSIGNMENTS: Individual assignment work will be given as and when required but overlapping will be avoided and the HoDs will monitor in consultation with all the other faculty heads.

CHANGING THE OPTIONAL SUBJECTS

  1. No candidate shall be permitted to change her subject of study after 31st August in grade 11.
  2. The candidate shall not be offered a subject in Class XII which she/he has not studied and passed in Class XI.

ADMISSION TO CBSE EXAMINATIONS

  1. No candidate who has been expelled or is under the punishment of rustication or is debarred from appearing in or taking an examination for any reason whatsoever shall be admitted to the All India/Delhi Senior School Certificate Examinations conducted by the Board.
  2. The candidate shall have the required percentage of attendance (75%) for Class XI and XII as per the Examination byelaws of the Board to make her/him eligible for the examinations conducted by the Board.

SCHEME OF EXAMINATIONS

  1. Class XI examination shall be conducted by the school itself.
  2. The Board will conduct the external examinations at the end of Class XII.

 

GRADE XI ASSESSMENTS

  1. There will be two examinations; Assessment I in September, Assessment II in February.
  2. Assessments will be conducted for 70 marks for all the science subjects and 80 for other subjects. These exams will be for three hours. 25% of these questions will be objective type and the remaining 75% the subjective type. 33% of internal choice will be ensured in all question papers.
  3. In addition to this there will be Internal Assessments (Periodic assessment 10 marks and projects and practical exams 10) for 20 marks for Mathematics.
  4. Separate timetable will be issued for Term End Exams and Internal Assessments.
  5. Periodic Assessments (pen and paper) are for 1 hour for 30 marks for each subject, and candidates will be assessed internally on the project/practical works they are asked to complete.
  6. Assessment I, II will have practical examinations as well.

PROMOTION FROM GRADE 11 TO 12 –WEIGHTING APPLICABLE

  1. 10% of IA – Tests
  2. 20% of Assessment I
  3. 30% of Assessment II
  4. 40% of Assessment III

GRADING AND PASS CRITERIA

  1. Assessment of theory/practical papers of main subjects shall be in numerical scores and grades. In case of internal assessment, only grades shall be shown for all subjects.
  2. The qualifying marks in each subject for external examination shall be 33%. However, in a subject involving practical work, a candidate must obtain 33% marks in the theory and 33% marks in the practical separately in addition to 33% marks in aggregate (cumulative score), to qualify in that subject.
  3. A candidate will be eligible to get the pass certificate of the Board if she/he gets a grade higher than ‘E’ in all subjects of internal assessment unless she/he is exempted. Failing this, the result of the external examination will be withheld but not for a period of more than one year.
  4. To be declared as having passed the examination, a candidate shall obtain a grade higher than E (i.e., at least 33% marks) in all the five subjects of external examination in the main or at the end of the compartmental examination. The pass marks in each subject of external examination shall be 33%. In case of a subject involving practical work a candidate must obtain 33% marks in theory and 33% marks in practical separately in addition to 33% marks in aggregate in order to qualify in that subject.
  5. Failing in one subject – compartment exam within a week after the result declaration. Failing in 2 or more subjects, student will be detained in XI.

SCHEME OF EXAMINATION:

GRADE X

  1. Class 10 CBSE examination has two components.
  • Internal Assessment for 20 marks
  • CBSE examination in March for 80 marks
  1. Internal assessment will have four components.
  • Periodic Test
  • Multiple Assessment
  • NBE – Portfolio Evaluation (Classwork, self-assessment, journals)
  • Subject Enrichment Activities
  1.  There will be 2 Periodic Tests and the marks will be reduced to 5 and sent to the board as part of internal assessment.
  2. 5 marks will be awarded for Multiple Assessment like quizzes, oral tests, concept map, exit cards, visual expressions etc.
  3. 5 marks for portfolio evaluation and 5 marks for subject enrichment activities will also form part of the internal assessment.
  4. There will be Half Yearly Examinations in September, Split Examinations in December, Pre-Board I in Jan and Pre-board II in February.
  5. The marks scored in the pre-board I will be the basis for admission to grade 11. For science stream with math – 70% in science and 70% in Standard Math. Science stream without math – 70% in Science and 60% in Standard Math or 70% in Basic Math. Commerce with math – 65 % in Math is a must.
  6. CBSE examination will be conducted in March and each paper will be for 80 marks and 3-hour duration.
  7. In the CBSE examination, passing the internal assessment is a must. Pass mark is 33%
  8. The grades are on a 9–point scale as is the case for grades 5 – 10.
  9. Grades for Co- Scholastic subjects are same as for grades 5 – 10.

 

GRADE XII

  1. Recapitulation Tests are conducted on Sundays which is to help the children revise their lessons regularly. These Tests are for 20 marks and 40 minutes duration.
  2. Periodic Assessment will be conducted along with the rest of the secondary sections. It is for 30 marks and is 1-hour duration.
  3. Half Yearly Examinations are for 70 marks for practical based subjects and 80 marks for other subjects, 3-hour duration conducted in September.
  4. In addition to this there will be Internal Assessments (Periodic assessment 10) marks and projects and practical exams 10) for 20 marks for Mathematics, Political Science, Legal Studies etc.
  5. Split assessment is held in December as per board pattern.
  6. Pre-board I in Jan and Pre-board II in February.
  7. CBSE practical examination will be held in January – February and that depends on the dates given by the schools of Kuwait Chapter.
  8. Internal grades for General Studies, Work experience and Physical education will have to be sent to the board and hence a record of that must be maintained by the teachers teaching these subjects on a 9-point scale.

ABSENT FOR THE ASSESSMENT

It is mandatory for a student to appear in all the assessments conducted by the school/board.

EVALUATION OF ANSWER SHEETS

  • The evaluation of the answer sheets should be completed within 5 days after the completion of the written assessment.
  • Evaluation should be done by using RED INK
  • Marks will be entered on the paper and will be cross checked by the HoD
  • Teachers must upload the marks in the portal by the date specified in the Office Communication failing which she/he is answerable to the Principal.
  • Class teachers will maintain a separate consolidated grade sheet/Mark sheet (in the form provided in this diary for teachers) to enter the grades of written assessment for all the subjects.
  • Grade list/mark list must be handed over to the class teachers before the open house and answer papers must be distributed in the class by the concerned subject teachers and the answers to be discussed in the class.
  • Separate files should be maintained by the students to keep the answer sheets of the written assessment. All the answer papers will be given to the parents on the day of the open house. Answer paper need not be stored in the classroom after the open house.
  • Teachers must upload remarks/ comments pertaining to their subject in the ‘KNOW YOUR CHILD’ columns provided in the portal before the ‘Open House’ (PTM)

 

PROGRESS REPORT

Progress Report will be prepared after Half Yearly Examination and Yearly Examination by the school digital campus.

  • All the entries must be error free. Please check twice before mark submission
  • Teachers need to enter only their marks or grades in the digital campus portal before the specified date for the concerned assessment.
